Inside the Storm

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

Chest heaving, heart squeezing, tears streaming, barely breathing, mind reeling.

I'm falling down a great big hole of despair, darkness consuming me from all sides and swallowing me whole. I try to grab ahold of something, anything, to crawl out of this misery. But the steep slope turns to mush in my hands, and I slide down, sinking further into its bottomless pit. I can feel the fear welling inside of me, just as well as I feel this silent, agonizing scream, aching inside my chest as it builds into something ready to rip out of my throat.

I feel lost.

I feel hurt.

I feel scared.

I feel broken.

I feel weary.

I feel confused.

I feel empty.

I feel. . . lifeless.

When something terrible and unexpected jumps out of nowhere and into your life, it hits you hard. So, it's only natural to feel all these raging emotions at once and to want to cry your heart out from such overwhelming emotions stirring inside of you.

It's hard to think of anything else because you feel like your world is crumbling and that you're the cause of it. It may be a little narcissistic, but that's how many of us feel; that it was our fault for causing something so wrong and shocking to happen. And to be honest, it partially could be our fault, but there could be other reasons behind such occurrences as well. Although, we don't tend to think about that. Rather, we focus within. And that tends to lead to. . .

"Maybe, there's something wrong with me, maybe I'm defective, or maybe I'm just that unloveable," are the thoughts that go through my head.

And that's exactly what I was thinking, well, a shortened version of it anyway. But luckily, God called out to me through the Holy Spirit and reminded me, "I am loveable, I am made perfect in Him, that I am good enough, and I am a child of God; His daughter who was bought and redeemed at a high price."

Hebrews10:14

"For by that one offering, He forever made perfect those who are being made holy."

Inside, the storm is messy, and things just seem to go wrong and far from the way you expect them to go. It just plain hurts. And there are even times through it that you want to give up on life altogether. But sometimes, it's

those trials that the storm brings that are necessary for us to grow.

I'm not saying that it makes going through these storms any easier. Honestly, I wish no one would have to go through them. . . for no one ever to have to suffer again. Unfortunately, though, that's how we learn and are reminded to call upon the Lord. So, try to think of the rough patches of storms as God giving you a time of reflection and self-growth as you lean on Him through it. It's truly the only way to get through them. And once you do, the storm won't last for long because God will pull you through it and back to bright, clear, open, sunny skies once more.

1Peter1:7

"These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold - though your faith is far more precious than gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Christ Jesus is revealed to the whole world."

So, while you're in the storm, it's alright to feel dejected, rundown, broken, lost, and weary, among many other emotions crowding inside you. And I know it's hard and not always possible, but try not to let the depression and anxiety overrun and take hold of you. Instead, remember God is with you always, working for your best and fighting your battles, guiding you to new heights if only you'll trust and have faith in Him.

Deuteronomy20:4

"For the Lord, your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and He will give you victory!"

Use this time inside the storm to think on your actions and words, how you treat others, what you can do to improve yourself to be the best you can be for God, your significant other, your family and friends, and of course, yourself. And most importantly, use this storm to seek the Lord above all else to create a deeper, more meaningful bond/relationship between you and Him.

One last thing to remember, God isn't completely shutting the door on you for certain situations, relationships, and/or opportunities. Rather, He's leaving it cracked open for you, giving you a chance to grow. So, when that door is once again fully reopened, you'll be able to walk through as an improved Christ-filled version of yourself.

1Peter1:6

"So, be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while."

I hope and pray this helps those of you going through your storms; I know it most certainly has for me. So, have faith, pray, and go with God!

Joshua1:9

"This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord, your God is with you wherever you go."

P.S.

I want to thank my family and best friend, Megan, for helping me through the rough patch of storm I'm experiencing right now and giving me the Godly advice and wisdom I needed to hear. Thank you so much, and I love you!

Mathew11:28

"Then Jesus said, "Come to me all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."

Psalms26:11

"But I am not like that; I live with integrity. So redeem me and show me mercy."

Psalms78:35

"Then they remembered that God was their rock, that God Most High was their redeemer."

Romans5:3-5

"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment."
